About
The Parliament of India is the supreme legislative body of the Republic of India. It follows a bicameral system and consists of the President, the Rajya Sabha (Upper House) and the Lok Sabha (Lower House), with its seat in New Delhi. The Rajya Sabha is a permanent house. Its members serve six-year terms, and one-third of its members are elected every two years, representing the interests of states and union territories. Members of the Lok Sabha are directly elected by voters for a five-year term, holding core powers including financial approval and the right to move votes of no confidence. The Parliament is mainly responsible for legislation, constitutional amendments, examination of the Union budget and oversight of the Union executive. All bills take effect only after being passed by both houses and assented to by the President. It serves as the core pillar of India’s parliamentary democracy.
