Background:

The Australian Inventory of Industrial chemicals (AIIC) includes chemicals used in Australia between January 1, 1977 and February 28, 1990, as well as chemicals assessed after 1990. Up to now, more than 40,000 chemicals are included to the AIIC.

Chemicals listed in the AIIC are classified as existing chemicals, while chemicals not listed in the AIIC or chemicals whose intended uses do not comply with its conditions of use are classified as new chemicals. To identify their potential risks to the environment and human health, new chemicals shall be assessed by competent authorities prior to their importation or production unless they are exempted. AIIC contains public Inventory and confidential Inventory while confidential substances are required to submit inquiry request for relevant information. AIIC aims to properly manage industrial chemicals in Australia and safeguard the environment and public health.
