Recently, Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) published an amendment to the “Positive List of Basic Materials for Food-Contact Articles” (TABLE 1) on its official website, introducing three key changes to Appendix 16 “Polymers whose principal monomer is acrylic acid”:
1.The use of C18 alkyl acrylate as a co-monomer is prohibited.
2.Dicyclopentanyl methacrylate has been added as an essential monomer, permitted only in copolymer systems where acrylic acid accounts for ≥ 50 % of the total monomers.
3.All previous restrictions on the ultraviolet absorber 2-[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]ethyl methacrylate have been removed.
