The Standing Committee of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, commonly referred to as the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress Standing Committee, is the permanent body of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress. During the recess of the Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, the Standing Committee exercises the powers of the People's Congress on its behalf.
The Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, abbreviated as the Shanghai People's Congress, is the highest organ of state power in Shanghai and also serves as the legislative and deliberative body of the city. The current term of office for municipal deputies is five years.
A similar counterpart at the same level is the Shanghai Municipal Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which functions as a consultative body.
