Main Content:
This part specifies two standard methods and two reference methods for determining diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP), and diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) in polymers used in electrical and electronic products. The standard methods are gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with a pyrolyzer/thermal desorption accessory (Py/TD-GC-MS). The GC-MS method is the standard method for the quantitative determination of DIBP, DBP, BBP, DEHP, DNOP, DINP, and DIDP, with a determination range from 50 mg/kg to 2000 mg/kg. The Py/TD-GC-MS method is applicable to the screening and semi-quantitative analysis of DIBP, DBP, BBP, DEHP, DNOP, DINP, and DIDP in polymer materials of electrical and electronic products, with a determination range of 100 mg/kg to 2000 mg/kg. Ion attachment mass spectrometry (IAMS) is applicable to the screening and semi-quantitative analysis of DIBP, DBP, BBP, DEHP, DNOP, DINP, and DIDP, as detailed in Appendix A. Due to limitations in mass spectral resolution, the methods for determining DBP and DIBP, DEHP and DNOP using IAMS have not been established. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is limited to the determination of BBP, DEHP, DNOP, DINP, and DIDP, as detailed in Appendix B. Due to mass spectral resolution limitations, the methods for determining DBP and DIBP using LC-MS have not been established. Appendix C of this part provides flowcharts describing how to use the two standard methods: Py/TD-GC-MS and GC-MS, and how to use the two reference methods: direct injection (DIP)-ion attachment mass spectrometry (IAMS) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). These four testing methods have been evaluated by testing phthalate contents ranging from approximately 450 mg/kg to 30000 mg/kg in polyethylene (PE) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) materials. The four methods described in this part have not been specifically evaluated for other polymer types, phthalate compounds, or concentrations outside the specified range.
