The UK REACH Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list is part of the regulation under UK REACH for substances that may have serious consequences for human health or the environment. The list includes substances that are, but are not limited to, carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic for reproduction (CMR), as well as substances that are persistent, bio-accumulative, and toxic (PBT) or very persistent and very bio-accumulative (vPvB). Additionally, the list covers other substances for which there is scientific evidence of probable serious effects on human health or the environment, such as substances with endocrine-disrupting properties.
For substances included in the SVHC list, companies must fulfill the following responsibilities:
- Information Communication: If a supplier provides an article containing a substance listed on the SVHC list at a concentration above 0.1% weight by weight (w/w), they must provide the recipient with sufficient information to ensure the safe use of the article.
- SVHC Notification: If the production or import of articles containing SVHCs is involved, it may be necessary to submit a notification to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) in the UK.
- Safety Data Sheet for Mixtures: If a supplier provides a mixture that is not classified as hazardous according to the UK CLP regulation and contains at least one SVHC at a concentration above 0.1% (w/w), they must provide a safety data sheet upon request from the recipient.
- Safety Data Sheet for Substances: If a supplier provides a substance listed on the UK REACH SVHC list, they must provide the customers with the safety data sheet for that substance.
Please note that substances listed on the UK SVHC list may also be included in the UK REACH Authorisation List (Annex 14), and these substances will be subject to the authorisation provisions of UK REACH. Companies will need to apply for authorisation to place these substances on the UK market after the sunset date specific to the substance.
