On July 21, 2025, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today the inclusion of 18 new chemicals into its Safer Chemical Ingredients List (SCIL). This update brings the total number of chemicals on the list to 983, spanning industries such as cleaning agents, industrial solvents, and more.

Under the latest amendments to the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), new chemicals must now undergo EPA safety evaluations before entering the market. The 18 newly listed substances passed rigorous assessments under the Safer Choice Program, exceeding safety standards in human health risk evaluations, ecotoxicological indicators, environmental persistence, and other criteria.

As part of the environmental pillar of the Powering the Great American Comeback initiative, the SCIL update coincides with enhancements to a digital query platform. Businesses can now compare chemical safety levels using a three-color labeling system, while consumers can scan product QR codes to access ingredient traceability data. The EPA aims to achieve full smart traceability coverage for certified products by 2026.
