South Korea Revises the Notice on the Designation of Toxic Substances

On October 4, 2023, the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) in South Korea announced the proposed amendment to the Notice on the Designation of Toxic Substances (NIRE Notice No. 2023-459), aiming to strengthen the regulation of toxic substances.

Major changes:

 1. Substance name with unique number “2017-1-758” is adjusted;

Substance number Name of substances and content specification
2017-1-758 [Triphenylsulfonium salt with 2,3-bis(2,2,2-trifluoroethyl)5-sulfobicyclo [2.2.1] heptane-2,3-dicarboxylate (1:1);2064323-02-8] or mixture containing 25% and above

2. Substance number has been added;

Substance number Name of substances and content specification
Name of substances and content specification [Methacrylic acid; 79-41-4] and mixtures containing 5% and above of the substance
2023-1-1120 [1, 3-Bis (isocyanatomethyl)benzene; 3634-83-1] and mixture containing 1% and above of the substance
2023-1-1121 [Dioctyltin dichloride; 3542-36-7] and mixtures containing 1% and above of the substance
2023-1-1122 [Beryllium; 7440-41-7] and mixtures containing 1% and above of the substance

This Notice becomes effective three months following its publication. Comments from individuals or institutions can be submitted your comments to the NIER by October 23, 2023.

This revision reflects an enhanced approach to the regulation of toxic substances, ensuring the safety of both the public and the environment. The National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) is actively seeking public comments to foster a healthier and more sustainable path for environmental development.
