The Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) has adopted Resolution No. 22/24, updating the positive list of additives permitted in plastic materials and polymeric coatings intended to come into contact with food, as established in Resolution No. 39/19. The amendment introduces two new substances aimed at enhancing food safety and material functionality.
The newly added substances include:
-
M91: Silver magnesium sodium borophosphate (Fosfato de plata-magnesio-sodio-boro), restricted for use only as an antimicrobial agent. Its content in the final product must not exceed 2.25%, with silver content limited to 1.77%.
-
M92: Diethylaminoethanol (Dietilaminoetanol), permitted only for use in coatings or as a polymerization aid in plastics, with a migration limit of 0.05 mg/kg.
The resolution applies to all relevant products within member states, trade between them, and imports from outside the region. Member countries are required to incorporate these changes into their national legal frameworks by March 10, 2025, and designate competent national authorities for implementation through Working Subgroup No. 3 (SGT No. 3).
