EU List of Substances Subject to POPs Regulation

Regulation (EC) No 850/2004 on persistent organic pollutants is promulgated in 2004, which covers various persistent organic pollutants commonly used in industrial and consumer products. On June 25, 2019, the European Union issued Regulation (EU) 2019/1021 on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Controlled substances include pesticides, flame retardants, perfluorinated compounds, and other organic substances accumulate in the environment and living organisms and pose threats to the environment and human health. New POPs may be included in the Stockholm Convention before included in the Regulation (EU) 2019/1021. Any party to the Stockholm Convention, including the EU, can submit a proposal to add a new persistent organic pollutant to the annexes of the Convention. Their proposals must enable the substance’s properties to be assessed against screening criteria listed in Annex D to the Convention.
