India Amends QCO for PE Material

On January 4, 2024, the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers of India released the Polyethylene Material for Moulding and Extrusion (Quality Control) Amendment Order, S.O. 68(E), a revision of the Polyethylene Material for Moulding and Extrusion (Quality Control) Order, 2022, S.O. 1647(E). This amendment order was made after consultation with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).

The following materials are exempted from S.O. 68(E):  

  • Low Density Polyethylene Extrusion (LDPE) Coating;
  • Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) Film Grades (Blown/ Cast) or Pharma;
  • Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) Butene Grades;
  • Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) Hexene/ Octene Grades;
  • Metallocene Polyethylene Grades;
  • Base Resins of Power Cable, Jacketing and other applications; and
  • Compounds for Cable Jacketing/ Sheathing/ Polyethylene-80 and Polyethylene-100 (Black and Pigmented)/ Reinforcement Fillers.

This amendment order is effective on January 5, 2024. Once implemented, PE materials for moulding and extrusion not in the exemption scope are required to obtain a license from the BIS and then label the corresponding standard mark on relevant products.
