On June 26, 2025, the Australian government released a series of health and environmental risk evaluations for specific industrial chemicals. These evaluations were conducted in accordance with Section 78 of the Industrial Chemicals Act of 2019, covering various chemicals' usage and potential risks. The 18 evaluations were finalized following a public consultation period from April 2 to May 29 of this year. During this period, government agencies collected public feedback and revised the evaluations accordingly.

No new means of managing risk are proposed

EVA00168

Ethoxylated alcohols

Yes - Exposure and hazard information

A variation to the evaluation statement was required. The evaluation statement has been amended to include additional Australian use information and to clarify the influence of ethoxylation on the aquatic hazards of chemicals. The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling for Chemicals (GHS) for the majority of chemicals was appended with a note indicating that hazards may depend on composition.

No new means of managing risk are proposed

EVA00169

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) and its salts and complexes

Yes - Use information

A variation to the evaluation statement was required. The evaluation statement has been amended to include Australian use information.

EVA00175

Phenol, 2,2'-[(1-methyl-1,2-ethanediyl)bis(nitrilomethylidyne)]bis-

No

-

Recommendation to regulatory body (workers); Information relating to safe introduction and use

EVA00180

C4 and C5 alkanoic acids

Yes - Hazard information

A variation to the evaluation statement was required. The proposed classification for the chemicals under specific target organ toxicity (STOT) following single exposure (SE) in accordance with the GHS has been removed after reconsideration of acute toxicity data.

Recommendation to regulatory body (workers); Information relating to safe introduction and use

EVA00181

2-Butanone oxime (MEKO)-releasing silanes

No

No public comments were received. Amendments have been made to the statement based on publication of a new European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) proposal for harmonised classification and labelling during the public consultation period. New hazard data for acute toxicity and genotoxicity was added to the statement. Further information about the carcinogenicity classification was also included.

Proposal to vary terms of the inventory; Recommendation to regulatory body (public health); Recommendation to regulatory body (workers); Information relating to safe introduction and use

EVA00182

2-Propenoic acid, 2-cyano-3,3-diphenyl-, 2-ethylhexyl ester (Octocrylene)

Yes - Hazard information

A variation to the evaluation statement was required. The evaluation statement has been amended to clarify: that the chemical may cause adverse effects on fertility only if exposed to sufficiently high doses; that the risk to workers relates to exposure during formulation of end use products and that worker exposure to formulated products is unlikely to pose a risk. As the hazard information had already been considered, no change has been made to the GHS classification.
