A Chemical Added to AIIC Following Assessment Certificate

On 9 December 2025, in accordance with Section 83 of the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019, a chemical was added in advance to the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC) following the issuance of an assessment certificate.

New chemical added:

Chemical Name       

Benzoic acid, 2-hydroxy-, 2-methylpentyl ester

Defined Scope of Assessment

  • as imported into Australia at up to 1 tonne per year
  • as imported at up to 100% concentration for reformulation into finished end-use products
  • as imported in finished end-use products as a component
  • for end-use in personal care products (cosmetics) excluding lipsticks and oral care products, laun dry and dishwashing products, cleaning and furniture care products, air care products
  • for end use at a concentration off:
  • up to 0.1% in cosmetics if used by children below 10 years of age
  • up to 2% in leave-on cosmetics and fine fragrances when not used by children below 10 years of age
  • less than 3% in rinse-off cosmetics when not used by children below 10 years of age
  • up to 0.4% in deodorants
  • up to 3% in laundry and dishwashing products, cleaning and furniture care products and air care products

Through these regulations, AICIS aims to enhance the management efficiency of industrial chemicals while ensuring their use does not pose a threat to the environment or public health.
