On July 7, 2026, the Australian Industrial Chemicals Introduction Scheme (AICIS) issued a notice varying the terms of listing for 4-Phenylbenzophenone (CAS 2128-93-0) in the Australian Inventory of Industrial Chemicals (AIIC), pursuant to section 86 of the Industrial Chemicals Act 2019. This follows the final evaluation conclusion (EVA00201) issued by AICIS on June 26, 2026, which concluded that while the risks of the substance's existing industrial uses are generally manageable, it presents skin sensitisation and reproductive/developmental toxicity risks, necessitating an adjustment to its inventory reporting requirements.
Under the varied terms, an introducer must, within 20 working days, report the introduction volume and the end use to the Executive Director of AICIS (under section 101 of the Act) where any of the following circumstances apply:
- The chemical is used for consumer end uses (excluding its use in articles)
- The end use has changed or may change (e.g., a shift away from uses such as ink and toner colorants, paints and coatings, the manufacture of chemicals and plastic polymers, or adhesives and sealants)
- The annual introduction volume exceeds 1 tonne
- The manufacturing of the chemical commences in Australia
In addition, if the introducer becomes aware of new information indicating that the chemical has an adverse effect on the environment, this must also be reported within 20 working days. The variation of the inventory terms takes effect on August 4, 2026. Relevant introducers should promptly verify their situations and fulfil their reporting obligations.
