Recently, the Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) of Japan published the latest revision to the Positive List of Food Contact Materials – Base Materials (TABLE 1) on its official website, which introduces the following three adjustments to Appendix 12 "List of Polymers Predominantly Containing Ester Linkages" and Appendix 17 "List of Polymers Predominantly Containing Amide Linkages (Including Polymers with Hexamethylenediamine or 2-Ethyl-2-oxazoline as Primary Monomers":
1. Add 4-hydroxybutanoic acid (CAS No.: 591-81-1) as an essential monomer under Appendix 12, applicable to polymers where the total molar ratio of alcoholic acid monomers is no less than 50% and the main chain is linked by ester bonds;
2. Add 1,5-pentanediamine (CAS No.: 462-94-2) as an essential monomer under Appendix 17, applicable to polymers where the total molar ratio of amine-acid monomers is no less than 50% and the main chain is linked by amide bonds;
3. Relocate the entry "hydrogenated and dimerized unsaturated fatty acids" originally listed under the amines category in Appendix 17 to the acids category.

Update to the Japan-Positive List of Food Contact Materials-Two essential monomers added, one classification corrected

Recently, Japan’s Consumer Affairs Agency (CAA) published an amendment to the “Positive List of Basic Materials for Food-Contact Articles” (TABLE 1) on its official website, introducing three key changes to Appendix 16 “Polymers whose principal monomer is acrylic acid”:
1.The use of C18 alkyl acrylate as a co-monomer is prohibited.
2.Dicyclopentanyl methacrylate has been added as an essential monomer, permitted only in copolymer systems where acrylic acid accounts for ≥ 50 % of the total monomers.
3.All previous restrictions on the ultraviolet absorber 2-[3-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-hydroxyphenyl]ethyl methacrylate have been removed.
